Banned iPhone Apps

3 October 2011

Apple Inc. has removed a mobile app, called "Jew or Not Jew?" from its online App Store in France. Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said the app did violate local law, so it was removed from the French App Store. It is still available outside France, however, and currently sells for $1.99 through Apple's US App Store.

Apple has removed numerous apps from the App Store since it launched in mid-2008 for violating myriad restrictions it imposes on developers. Take a look at other notable apps that ran afoul of the company's screening process.

Facebook is finally launching its iPad application and will be doing so at Apple’s October 4th event, rumored to be the release of the iPhone 5.

According to Mashable‘s sources, the social network may also introduce its latest iPhone app, potentially revamped in HTML5, at the same event.

The app has been long awaited. In July, iPad-wielding Facebookers were given a taste of what may come when screenshots of the app were leaked. The app has been in development for over a year and just this morning Jeff Verkoeyen, the former iPad app lead engineer, quit out of frustration.

Apple's iPhone 5 was expected to not have a massive change in its basic case design. Now there is evidence that the next version of the popular smartphone could have a bigger touch screen than first predicted. MacRumors.com is reporting that it has obtained what it claims are third party cases designed specifically for the iPhone 5. The report, which does not name the companies behind these cases, claims that after measuring them it concludes that they are for a smartphone with the dimensions of 4.7 inches by 2.6 inches.

Those case dimensions suggests that the iPhone 5's screen size could be as large as 4 inches. That is much bigger than the current iPhone 4, which has a 3.5 inch touch screen. If the iPhone 5 does indeed have a 4 inch screen, this directly contradicts a report from last week that said the phone wouldn't have a larger screen after all.

The newest version of Apple Inc's popular iPhone has already hit the Chinese market -- the fake market that is.

The 'hiPhone 5' is selling for as little as 200 yuan ($31) on China's top e-commerce platform Taobao, which is owned by Alibaba Group.

But one has to pay around 800 yuan for a more "genuine" one, according to some shop clerks at a mobile phone market in Shanghai.

"Look at this. It's not the same as the 300-400 yuan ones," Shanghai-based daily Metro Express quoted a clerk as saying, pointing to one originally priced at 850 yuan.

But CNET's Edward Moyer says the release includes a Hearing Aid Mode designed to improve compatibility between iOS devices and hearing aids.

Apple rumored to work on an enhanced voice command system for its future iPhones.

Apple may bring the voice control system to its iO5 coming later this year, says AppleInsider. The enthusiast site noted the groundwork for Apple's voice command overhaul may have started when Apple acquired Siri, an iPhone personal assistant application heavily dependent on voice commands.

The proposed solution looks to cut down on the verbosity or "wordiness" of audio feedback systems, so they would not overwhelm the user. AppleInsider said the first application, entitled Adaptive Audio Feedback System and Method, streamlines systems that may contain a large amount of information.

Its code was found within an iPhone app update, and looks to be better-looking and easier to navigate than the iPhone version

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this month announced the release of new chat features, including Skype video calling, and mentioned that many more launches would appear in the coming weeks. Now, a Canadian engineering student has found one of the most anticipated launches ahead of its actual release -- the Facebook iPad app.

Marvin Bernal, a Canadian engineering student and iOS enthusiast, discovered the iPad app hidden within the code of Facebook's iPhone app after Facebook released an update to its iPhone app. Version 3.4.4 had some fixes, but Bernal noticed the iPad app code almost immediately and tweeted it for everyone to see.

Google has released the official Google+ app for the Apple iPhone. You can download it now directly from the Apple App Store.

Make sure that the version you grab is 1.0.1.1809 or later. Google mistakenly released a previous test version of the app which didn't have the stability and fixes that the latest version has. To check the version number, click on the gear icon on the top left of your app's homescreen and look right above the Help button.

Also, it's important to note that this app is just for the iPhone, not iOS in general. Google says that iOS5 is unsupported at this point and that iPad device support is coming soon. The search giant did not give details on timing for either though.
Google's official description of the app is as follows:

The move makes Google a stronger rival to Apple, which offers iPhone and iPad users similar services via the iTunes and iBooks apps.

Google's update also improves the design of Android Market on handsets, cutting out clutter and offering more options to help users find new apps.

The new books and movies service is only available to US users to begin with, with "selected countries outside the US" to be added at an unspecified later date. It follows the trend for "cloud" services, with purchases linked to users' Google accounts and accessible on their mobile phone, tablet or computer.

Google claimed the service means "no more waiting for downloads, syncing, or worrying about storage space".

If you own an iPhone 4 but know that Apple's smartphone can only connect to 3G-based wireless networks, you can considered yourself to be more enlightened than many other iPhone 4 users. According to a new study conducted by Retrevo, 34 percent of iPhone 4 users believe they own a 4G-based smartphone. In fact we may have to wait until at least 2012 for Apple to provide a phone that will use the LTE wireless networks from Verizon and AT&T.

In addition 24 percent of Blackberry owners also believe they have a 4G-based smartphone. The study states, "If nothing else this large number of 'misinformed' phone owners serves to emphasize the fact that consumers are quite confused about 4G." Indeed AT&T refers to its HSPA + service as a 4G network even as it prepares to launch its much faster LTE based network in select cities sometime this summer.

There have been many rumors about the iPhone 4S lately, and now there's a rumor about the next iPad. Rumor now has it that Apple will be releasing a new member to the iPad lineup. Sources say that this is a revision to the iPad 2. One has to wonder if this is what Steve Jobs meant when he said 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2.

Sources for This is My Next say that the new device will be dubbed the iPad HD. It will have a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536. As hard as the idea of this tablet is to swallow, it is said to be aimed at folks who work in video and photo production. The tablet could even be released alongside a iPad version of Final Cut or Aperture. The device is said specifically to not be an iPad 3, meaning it is complimentary to the lineup. Think MacBook and MacBook Pro.
