Developers now have until June 1 to make their applications compliant with the new Mac App Store sandboxing restrictions, Apple announced on Tuesday.

The original deadline was March 1, but developers now have an additional three months to bring their software in line with the new rules. The sandboxing entitlements are already found in OS X 10.7.3 Lion and new APIs in Xcode 4.3.

Sandboxing of applications is Apple's initiative to make the Mac platform even more secure by restricting what applications can do within the operating system. This helps to prevent problems like malware taking over third-party applications and utilizing them to do something malicious.

Could a software program determine if an employee at work has good or bad habits? That's the possible interpretation of a newly revealed application by Microsoft to the US Patent and Trademark Office. As reported by Geekwire, the idea behind the patent proposal is that the monitoring of an employee's interactions with others via phone, email, text messages and more could be categorized by a computer program. That program could then generate a score based on pre-determined parameters for each employee.

The proposal would even extend to video conferences. The application claims that gestures from employees during the conference could be monitored and interpreted by the program. Likewise, other factors such as what a team member wears to work could be categorized by the proposal software program and raise or lower an employee's overall score. As with other patent applications there's no word if Microsoft actually has such software in development.

Banned iPhone Apps

3 October 2011

Apple Inc. has removed a mobile app, called "Jew or Not Jew?" from its online App Store in France. Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said the app did violate local law, so it was removed from the French App Store. It is still available outside France, however, and currently sells for $1.99 through Apple's US App Store.

Apple has removed numerous apps from the App Store since it launched in mid-2008 for violating myriad restrictions it imposes on developers. Take a look at other notable apps that ran afoul of the company's screening process.

Your ideas for Android or iOS apps could make you money, via the free FundedApps application. But you'll have to pay to submit your ideas.
Price: free for app; £1.49 per idea (iOS and Android)

If there’s a major weakness in Android, it remains the lack of really superb apps. Where there is a massive increase daily in the number of apps available, it’s the lack of real polish and finesse in many that plagues Android. That’s surely why even Andy Rubin, Google’s man in charge of Android, was still describing the entire platform as ‘for early adopters’ relatively recently.

Now, a Canadian engineering student has found one of the most anticipated launches ahead of its actual release -- the Facebook iPad app.

Marvin Bernal, a Canadian engineering student and iOS enthusiast, discovered the iPad app hidden within the code of Facebook's iPhone app after Facebook released an update to its iPhone app. Version 3.4.4 had some fixes, but Bernal noticed the iPad app code almost immediately and tweeted it for everyone to see.

Google has released the official Google+ app for the Apple iPhone. You can download it now directly from the Apple App Store.

Make sure that the version you grab is 1.0.1.1809 or later. Google mistakenly released a previous test version of the app which didn't have the stability and fixes that the latest version has. To check the version number, click on the gear icon on the top left of your app's homescreen and look right above the Help button.

Also, it's important to note that this app is just for the iPhone, not iOS in general. Google says that iOS5 is unsupported at this point and that iPad device support is coming soon. The search giant did not give details on timing for either though.
Google's official description of the app is as follows:

If it seems as if Twitter has a large application eco-system, that's because... well, it does. So large, in fact, that the company has just announced its one millionth registered application.

According to Twitter, more than $500 million has been invested in Twitter apps since December 2010, with more than a billion dollars being paid out in acquisitions. The 1,000,000 app number is up from just 150,000 apps a year ago, with that growth spike best demonstrated by the statistic that a new Twitter-related app is registered with the company every 1.5 seconds.

With this kind of growth around Twitter apps, it's no wonder that the micro-blogging company launched its own Developer Site yesterday, complete with new app manager, developer blog and discussion forum.
