About Kiev

Kiev (also spelt Kyiv) is the capital of Ukraine and one of the biggest cities in Europe. It has been standing on steep hills overlooking the Dnipro River for more than 1,500 years. Since then, Kiev has developed into a valuable center of East Europe attracting foreign businesses and investors to its economic and natural potential. Kiev has an area about 836 square kilometers, for about 350 square kilometers have been built on, it is about 42,3 %. The rest of area has been occupied by reservoir storage and forest tract and plantations of common use. Kiev population is 2,626 millions of people.

Kiev is truly on of the most beautiful capitals of the world. In Kiev there are some of the most beautiful and old churches of the world, fantastic cafes and restaurants, as well as, some of the most welcoming people.

Modern Kiev is one of the biggest Ukrainian centers of science and education. There are a great number of higher and secondary educational establishments, including some universities of international significance, for example two most prestigious universities of Ukraine: Kiev National Taras Shevchenko University and the National Technical University "Kiev Polytechnic Institute" A great number of school, gymnasiums, lyceums and about 70 of higher educational establishments are in Kiev. 10 of higher educational establishments provide education in information technologies field, so there is a great basis for IT development in the city. So it is obvious that Kiev plays a n invaluable role in IT education and development of Ukraine.

Boryspil International Airport (http://kbp.com.ua/ukrainian/golovna/index.html). All international flights to Kiev arrive at Boryspil International Airport, located 34 km (21 mi) from the city center. The most convenient way to get to downtown Kiev is by taxi. Taking into account that taxi drivers do not usually speak English, you should have your destination written down in Ukrainian/Russian. The average one-way fare is 100-300 UAH ($13.00-$38.00 USD). As at most international airports, fare gouging is common so make sure to settle on a price, before you get in the taxi.

There are also shuttle buses every 30 minutes connecting Boryspil Airport and downtown Kiev. Travel time is one hour and the price is 10 UAH ($1.27 USD).

The Kiev Metro runs from 06:00 until 24:00. First trains leave at 05:50 from the terminus of the line, and last trains leave the city center at 00:20. A fare is 2 UAH or about $0.25 US.
